Three-phase current formula and derivation of √3
In a balanced three-phase system, three sinusoidal voltages of equal amplitude are phase-shifted by 120° from one another. The voltage between a phase and neutral, called phase-to-neutral voltage V, is typically 230 V in Switzerland. The voltage between two phases, known as line-to-line voltage U, is 400 V. The ratio between these two voltages is not 2 but √3 ≈ 1,732, a direct consequence of the vector composition of two phases shifted by 120°: U = √3 · V.
The active power drawn by the three phases is P = 3 · V · I · cosφ, where I is the line current and cosφ the power factor. Replacing V by U/√3 yields the practical formula used by all designers: P = √3 · U · I · cosφ · η, i.e. I = P / (√3 · U · cosφ · η). If the apparent power S (in VA) is known, the formula simplifies to I = S / (√3 · U), with no cosφ involved since it is already included in S.

Star-delta starting: principle and limits
In practice, we obtain Id ≈ 2.5 · Iₙ (versus 6 to 8 · Iₙ in direct-on-line) and a starting torque divided by 3 compared with the delta connection. This characteristic imposes two conditions of use: (1) the motor must have six accessible terminals on its terminal plate (U1/V1/W1 and U2/V2/W2) to allow switching, and (2) the driven machine must accept starting at reduced torque, i.e. unloaded or lightly loaded (fans, centrifugal pumps, unloaded compressors, band saws). Machines with high breakaway torque (crushers, loaded conveyors, piston compressors) cannot be started in star-delta.
The control diagram requires three contactors (line KL, star KS, delta KT) mechanically and electrically interlocked, plus a time delay of the star→delta changeover (typically 5 to 15 seconds depending on the load inertia). Since the 2000s, star-delta starting has largely been replaced by electronic soft starters (soft-starters) or by variable frequency drives, which offer a smoother, adjustable start compatible with all loads.
Phase balancing in three-phase systems
La NIBT 4.7.3 recommends a maximum imbalance of 10 % between the most and least loaded phases.
Les outils CAO comme ElectroSchema automate this balancing transfer and flag imbalances above 10 % in real time.

FAQ — Questions from designers
What is the three-phase current formula?
For a balanced three-phase load supplied at line-to-line voltage U, the line current is I = P / (√3 · U · cosφ · η) where P is in watts, U in volts, cosφ the power factor and η the efficiency. If the apparent power S in VA is known, the formula becomes I = S / (√3 · U). The factor √3 ≈ 1.732 comes from the relationship between line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltage in a balanced system. Example: 7.5 kW motor at 400 V, cosφ 0.85, η 0.85 → I = 7500 / (1.732 · 400 · 0.85 · 0.85) ≈ 14.97 A.
Why √3 in the three-phase formula?
La puissance totale absorbée vaut P = 3 · U_simple · I · cosφ = √3 · U_composée · I · cosφ.
What is the starting current of a three-phase motor?
On direct-on-line starting, a squirrel-cage induction motor typically draws Id = 6 to 8 · Iₙ for 0.5 to a few seconds, until the rotor reaches its rated speed. For a 7.5 kW 400 V motor with cosφ 0.85 and η 0.85, where Iₙ ≈ 15 A, you can therefore expect an Id of 90 to 120 A. With star-delta or soft-start starting, the current is divided by about 2.4: Id ≈ 2.5 · Iₙ, i.e. ~37 A, at the cost of an equally reduced starting torque.
What is the difference between curve C and curve D for a motor?
How do you balance the phases in a three-phase system?
How do you annotate a three-phase cable on the diagram?
The cross bar of a three-phase cable carries the symbolic notation 3~ (three live conductors) or 3N~ (three phases + neutral), followed by the cross-section and the type. Example: 3N~ 5×6 mm² Cu means 5 conductors (L1, L2, L3, N, PE) of 6 mm² copper. For a motor without neutral, you write 3~ 4×4 mm² Cu. This convention appears in SIA 451 and IEC 60617. On the single-line diagram, a single line represents the whole cable, with an oblique stroke carrying the number of conductors and the cross-section.
